Costs & insurance

What does
therapy cost?

The cost of medical cannabis depends on the preparation, dosage and how you obtain it. Here is a neutral overview so you know what to expect.

Does health insurance cover the cost?

In Switzerland, medical cannabis is reimbursed by mandatory basic insurance only in exceptional cases, not as a rule. Coverage is possible on a case-by-case basis but must be requested in advance and approved by the insurer through a cost-coverage guarantee.

Always clarify possible reimbursement before starting therapy with your doctor and your health insurer. Without a cost-coverage guarantee, patients usually bear the cost themselves.

What does it cost as a self-payer?

There is no fixed single price. Medical cannabis is often prepared individually at the pharmacy as a magistral preparation; the price depends on the active substance, quantity and dosage form.

Ask your doctor and the dispensing pharmacy for a concrete cost estimate for your therapy.

What affects the cost?

Type of preparation (e.g. oil, flowers, extract)

THC and CBD content and the prescribed quantity

Magistral preparation versus a ready-made medicine

Accompanying medical consultations and follow-up checks

Our recommendation

Have the suitability of the therapy and the coverage question clarified in an initial consultation, obtain a cost-coverage guarantee if possible, and compare prices across pharmacies.
